Vega Grande Verdejo (2010)

The 2010 vintage has been characterised by the abundant rainfall 447 litres/m2.

The winter rains between October and March (300 litres/m2) provided enough water reserves, causing a vigorous and even budding. The low-lying areas of some plots were affected by mild frosts on the 5th and 6th of May, but these did not have a major effect on the yield thanks to the abundance of the crop.

The spring was fresh and somewhat rainy, allowing the plant to develop foliage, with blooming and pollination made somewhat more difficult by the cold and mildew. The months of July and August were temperate, dry and sunny. The low temperatures of the end of August delayed the ripening period, putting back the harvest later than usual.

The fresh weather and rains of mid September promoted a slow ripening of the grape as there was no water stress, giving fresh, aromatic musts.

The harvest was normal and the grapes were in excellent sanitary condition. The yields per hectare were above average thanks to the rains that fell during ripening.

The white wines have an excellent aromatic intensity, with good acidity and a moderate alcoholic strength, ensuring a perfect wine in the bottle.

Verdejo is a versatile grape with bags of character and personality. It is well adapted to the extreme conditions of the Duero region, allowing for fresh white wines or white wines fermented in caska. Verdejo, together with Viura, also grown in Rueda, are cold macerated, once they have been stemmed and cooled, to extract the maximum aromas from the lees and increase the sweetness of the wine. Once clarified and clean, the must ferments slowly for twenty days at a controlled temperature of between 13ºC and 15ºC, in order to preserve the fruity character of this variety. After ageing, the wine will be bottled between the January and the March after the harvest.
